3 Daily Items that are MORE Expensive than Craft Beer

By Nipa Brew - Admin 01 16 November, 2016
“Ha, Ang mahal naman niyan (What, that’s expensive)!”

“Bakit ang mahal, diba beer lang yan (Why is it that expensive, it’s only beer)?!”

These are just some of the things we, as craft brewers, hear on a day-to-day basis. And while Craft Beers are more expensive than other commercial beers around, you might be wasting money on these 3 even more crazy expensive items:

1. Coffee
Instant Coffee Sachet: P7.00
Specialty Coffee: P170.00
Price Difference Factor: 24x (2400%)

A sachet of instant coffee costs P7.00 in the grocery, and you are spending 24x of that just to say that you’re drinking an "Iced Caramel Cafe Mocha with Skim Milk, No Whip." If you spend P170.00 for a cup of coffee from uppity coffee shops, then you might as well burn your money, and use the smoke to shoo away evil spirits. That would surely wake you up too!

2. Iced Tea
Iced Tea Sachet: P15.00 for a liter, P5.00 per 330ml
Iced Tea in Restos: P60.00 per 330ml
Price Difference Factor: 12x (1200%)

Did you order iced tea last time you ate at a restaurant? Guess you must be ballin’ as hell to spend 12x what it should cost. If you feel the need to pee, you better hold it in. Or else, goodbye P60.00!

3. Transportation
Jeepney Fare: P20.00
Car Booking App: P300.00 with Surge
Price Difference Factor:  15x (1500%)

We all hate surge – it’s crazy. But it’s crazier to spend 15 times what transpo should cost. What’s that? Surge is cheaper when you use the “carpooling” option on the mobile app? One word: Jeepney. The original carpooling platform.

"Hmmm. Do I get beer... or beer?"

4. Now let’s compare beers.

Commercial Beer: P50.00
Nipa Brew Craft Beer: P190.00
Price Difference Factor: 4x (400%)

See that? Craft beer is only 4x more expensive than other commercial beers, while you spend so much money on coffee (24x), iced tea (12x), and transportation (15x).

TL;DR: You get what you pay for

We all pay different prices for different quality products – and you get what you pay for. Sure, taking a jeep is much cheaper than booking a ride, but you’re gonna sweat yourself to death. And coffee? You don’t wanna be caught stirring your instant coffee in a meeting with a high-end client, do you?

Same goes with beer. You can get a flavourful, high quality, craft beer made with no artificial ingredients. Or you can get the other stuff. The difference in pricing of a product reflects the benefits you get from it – whether it’s a functional benefit such as better quality ingredients, or an emotional benefit like making you feel cool.
